2022 DURHAM MINERS’ GALA – ANNOUNCEMENT
It is with the greatest regret that we need to announce that the community of Haswell and Haswell Plough will not be represented at this year’s Durham Miners Gala.
We are saddened that we have had to make this decision. Despite numerous attempts, we have not been able to negotiate the use of the Haswell Banner, which is currently in the stewardship of the Hazelwell Centre.
With only a week until the Gala, we have out of necessity cancelled the arrangements that had been made for the people of the Haswell parish to participate and demonstrate their pride in Haswell’s mining past.
The Parish Council is wholeheartedly committed to ensuring that we never face this situation in future.

Due to the success of our pilot scheme, we’re delighted to announce the launch of a new luncheon club for The Haswells!
The club will take place at St Paul’s Church Hall, Haswell every Thursday from 11.30am – 1.30pm. The cost is only £5.00 per week. Those attending will receive a two course meal and don’t have to worry about washing up! The club is also available to people from outside The Haswells wishing to attend.
The first meal on Thursday 1st March 2018 will be a Roast Beef Dinner with Yorkshire Pudding followed by Ginger Sponge with White Sauce.
Plus, we are also offering FREE TRANSPORT for people from The Haswells where we will come to your house to collect you and then return you home. This gives people the chance to get out and about and meet up with friends.
This weekly club is organised and funded by Haswell Parish Council, St Paul’s Church and Haswell & District Mencap.
To book your place and to arrange your FREE TRANSPORT, simply call 0191 5260987.
Avian influenza (bird flu) in winter 2017 to 2018
Last winter the UK experienced several outbreaks of avian influenza – better known as bird flu. This highly contagious disease affects birds including chickens, ducks and geese, and can be fatal to them, devastating farmers’ livelihoods. It is just as much of a risk to those with a few chickens in a back garden as to commercial farmers and anyone who keeps chickens, ducks or geese needs to be aware of the risk and take steps now to address it.
The Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is running a campaign asking anyone who keeps birds to take action to protect them against this devastating disease, and by doing so help prevent bird flu spreading and protect the livelihoods of farmers across the country.
Defra is asking local councils to share their advice on bird flu in their respective communities – for example on noticeboards, on social media, or in newsletters.
